NOTICE FOR RFI AMENDMENT APPLICATIONS

In accordance with the public notice prepared pursuant to Title 27 Section 21660.1 (b) of the California Code of Regulations for an RFI amendment application, please note:

 

(1)               Name and Location of facility applying for the RFI amendment:

Mariposa County Landfill, 5593 Highway 49 North, Mariposa, CA

(2)               Solid waste facilities permit/facility number:  22-AA-0001

(3)               Date RFI amendment application was received by the EA:  April 1, 2008

(4)               Description of the change proposed as an RFI amendment:

·         Change in operator from Total Waste Systems to Mariposa County Department of Public Works.

·         Construction and operation of the solid waste composting facility within the landfill’s property boundary.

·         Changes in permitted disposal capacity and estimated closure year.

·         Change in traffic flow on the site.

·         Other minor changes to update RDSI to reflect operations.

(5)               Date the Enforcement Agency (EA) approved the RFI amendment and the EA findings pursuant to Section 21665 (c):  April 30, 2008

(6)               Information on the availability of appeals to challenge the EA’s approval of the RFI amendment pursuant to Public Resources Code Section 44307:

PRC Section 44307 provides a process to the permit applicant and also from any person to request the EA to review an alleged failure of the agency to act as required by law or regulation.  A hearing may be held in accordance with the procedures specified in PRC Section 44310.

Garbage/Solid Waste Overview

The composting facility operated by Mariposa County is a closed vessel composting facility processing municipal solid waste (garbage).

ATTENTION!

New E-Waste (Electronic) and U-Waste (Universal) Requirements

 

Due to Regulatory Changes from the State of California and for reducing potential environmental impacts, as of February 9, 2006 the following items are no longer accepted for disposal or in the garbage at the Mariposa County Landfill, but Will be accepted for recycling and proper handling:

 

  • Common Batteries such as AA, C, D AAA, etc.

  •  

  • Fluorescent Tubes and Mercury Containing Lamps

  • Thermostats- Older Thermostats “Tilt Switch” Style

  • Electronic Devices- TV’s Computers, VCR’s, cell Phones, Radios Etc.

  • Electric Switches and Relays- pre 1972 Washing Machines, Freezers, electric space

  • Heaters, irons, ABS Brakes

  • Pilot Light Sensors-Stoves, Ovens, Dryers, Water Heaters and Furnaces and Space Heaters

  • Mercury Gauges- barometers, blood pressure and vacuum gauges

  • Mercury Novelties- Greeting cards that play music when opened

  • Athletic Shoes with flashing lights made before 1997

  • Mercury Thermometers

  • Non Empty aerosol cans

These items are hazardous in that they contain materials that have been determined to be hazardous by the Department of Toxic Substances Control.

The items must be separated from the garbage, as we can no longer dispose of the materials in the Landfill per the regulations.

 

It is illegal to dispose of the materials in the garbage to the landfill, but it is legal to collect the materials through the programs at the facilities.
