Mariposa County Public Works 2023 Pavement Rehabilitation Program has been partially funded by a grant from CalRecycle. CalRecycle promotes and encourages cities to use recycled tire rubber in street resurfacing projects. Merced Falls Road was resurfaced with a chip seal that is adhered to the pavement with an asphalt rubber binder containing ground up tires that would otherwise end up in landfills. This method of resurfacing not only recycles tires, but also results in a road surface with enhanced durability and flexibility due to the rubber content of the material. During the Merced Falls Road project 9,442 used tires were diverted from California’s Waste Stream.
